About these rates

The exchange rates here are mid-market reference rates published once daily by the European Central Bank, accessed via the free Frankfurter API. They are the same rates news outlets quote in headlines — the theoretical midpoint between buy and sell prices on currency markets.

What you'll actually be charged

Banks, brokers, and money-transfer services add a spread on top of the mid-market rate:

Always check the mid-market rate before accepting a quoted rate. A 2% spread on a $10,000 wire is $200 — not trivial.

Update cadence

The ECB publishes reference rates once per business day at around 16:00 CET. These rates remain fixed until the next publication, including over weekends. Real-time tick-by-tick rates require a paid market data feed; for personal use, daily ECB rates are accurate enough.

Frequently asked questions

Are these exchange rates the rate I'll actually get?
No — these are mid-market reference rates from the European Central Bank. Banks, brokers, and money-transfer services add a spread (typically 1–4%) plus possible fixed fees on top. Use the rate here as a reference to compare what you're being quoted elsewhere. The difference can be hundreds of dollars on large transfers.
How often are the rates updated?
The ECB publishes reference rates once per business day at around 16:00 CET. These rates remain fixed until the next publication. For real-time or tick-by-tick rates you'd need a paid market data feed; for everyday personal use, daily ECB reference rates are accurate enough to compare offers.
Where does the data come from?
The rates come from Frankfurter (frankfurter.dev), a free public API that mirrors the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. The ECB tracks roughly 30 currencies. The data is non-commercial and free to use; see Frankfurter's terms for high-volume or commercial use cases.
Can I see historical rates?
Not in this calculator currently — only today's rate. The underlying Frankfurter API exposes historical rates going back to 1999 if you build a custom integration. For most personal conversions (travel budgeting, remittance comparison), today's rate is what matters.
