Satoshis, explained

Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places, and the smallest unit — 0.00000001 BTC — is the satoshi. One bitcoin is exactly 100,000,000 sats. The unit exists for the same reason cents exist: when one whole unit is expensive, everyday amounts need a smaller denomination. At a $60,000 bitcoin price, a coffee costs thousands of sats, not a long string of leading zeros.

Converting in your own currency

Most sat converters only quote US dollars. This one converts directly to USD, GBP, CAD, or AUD using a live multi-currency bitcoin price — switch your market in the site header and the converter follows. The "quick reference" panel shows what one unit of your currency buys in sats, which is the most intuitive way to track bitcoin's price level over time.

Frequently asked questions

How many satoshis are in one bitcoin?
Exactly 100,000,000 — one hundred million satoshis per bitcoin. A satoshi is the smallest unit recorded on the bitcoin ledger, equal to 0.00000001 BTC, named after bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto.
How much is 100,000 sats worth?
100,000 sats is 0.001 BTC — one thousandth of a bitcoin. Its currency value moves with the bitcoin price: at $60,000 per BTC it's $60; at $100,000 it's $100. The converter above shows the live value in USD, GBP, CAD, or AUD.
Why think in sats instead of bitcoin?
Because whole-coin prices make small amounts awkward — '$25 buys 0.00039 BTC' is unreadable, while '39,000 sats' is not. Sats put everyday purchases, fees, and DCA buys on a human scale, the way cents do for dollars.
