Savings Rate

Your savings rate is the percentage of your income you save and invest rather than spend. It is the single most powerful lever for reaching financial independence — more important than investment returns for most people.

Savings rate = (Income − Spending) ÷ Income × 100. If you earn $80,000 and spend $60,000, your savings rate is 25%.

At a 50% savings rate and 7% real returns, financial independence takes roughly 17 years from a zero starting point. At 10%, it takes 43 years. The relationship is non-linear: doubling your savings rate more than doubles the speed to FI.

The FIRE community focuses intensely on savings rate rather than income, because someone earning $50,000 and saving 50% will reach FI faster than someone earning $150,000 and saving 10%.
