From hourly rate to take-home pay
The gross math is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year, plus overtime hours at their multiplier. The harder part is what comes out before you're paid — income tax and mandatory contributions — which this calculator estimates with the same current national tax tables used across the site (IRS, HMRC, CRA, ATO sources).
Quick reference (40 hrs/week, 52 weeks)
- $15/hour → $31,200/year gross
- $20/hour → $41,600/year gross
- $25/hour → $52,000/year gross
- $30/hour → $62,400/year gross
- $40/hour → $83,200/year gross
A handy mental shortcut: at full-time hours, hourly rate × 2 ≈ thousands per year ($25/hr ≈ $50k). Take-home is typically 75–85% of gross at these wage levels before state/provincial taxes.
Overtime and the "taxed more" myth
Overtime premiums (usually 1.5× past 40 hours/week in the US) are taxed exactly like regular wages. A larger paycheck can have proportionally more withheld because withholding tables annualise each period, but the actual tax owed at year-end follows the same brackets — overtime is not taxed at a special punitive rate, it just stacks on top of your other income at your marginal rate.
Watch the weeks assumption
52 paid weeks assumes paid vacation. Hourly workers without paid leave should count realistic working weeks — 48 or 50 — which cuts annual income by 4–8% and is the most common budgeting error hourly earners make.
